A small island tucked into the mangrove estuaries near Tumaco, Bocagrande is a magical place to spend a few days. A crystalline sea washes upon fine, silvery sand. Soft breezes moderate the warm days (mean temperature of 27°C / 81°F). Opportunities for scuba diving or snorkeling are nil, as there is no coral reefs; but waterfowl abound, for those birdwatcher travelers. The fishing is also astounding. So escape for civilization for a few days. Bask in those waters and sunshine. Sling up the ol’ hammock for your afternoon siesta. You have reached a small corner of paradise when you come to Bocagrande.

Getting There
Transmart (in Tumaco, along the dock at the end of Calle la Merced, and Calle del Comercio. Tel: 316-682-7243) runs launches to Bocagrande, only at high tide. In high season, it goes daily; in the low season, on demand. Passage costs $5.25 per person, or
