History

By Lorraine Caputo

Even though Alonso de Ojeda was the first Spaniard to sail around this cape in about 1498, the first to set foot on this land was Juan de la Cosa. In 1526 Martín Fernández de Enciso founded Nuestra Señora Santa María de los Remedios del Cabo de la Vela as the capital of the Guajira Territory. Later the administrative seat would be moved further south.
