History

By Lorraine Caputo

For centuries, this part of the coast was an important sea salt cultivation spot for Wayuu. The present town, San Agustín de Manaure, was founded in 1723 by Capuchin missionary friars. The namesake, Manaure, was a revered Wayuu warrior of the region. Like its neighbor Riohacha, Manaure was visited by pirates in search of necessary salt, as well as riches. Legend says the great Henry Morgan hid part of his booty here.
