Holiday & Fiesta

By Lorraine Caputo

Like every town along the Caribbean coast, Riohacha observes the pre-Lent feast of Carnaval beginning the Saturday before Ash Wednesday. It is claimed the one here is the oldest in Colombia. At about 3 a.m. on Sunday morning, men cover themselves with mud then enter town dancing the cumbia de pilón. The Queen of Carnaval and plain folks join in on the procession to the sea, where the men then wash themselves off. Look forward to lots of maicena (corn starch) and water being tossed.

Other celebrations to catch are the feast days of the Virgen de los Remedios, Riohacha’s patron saint, commemorating May 14, 1663 when she saved the city from a surging tide; and the Festival del Dividivi (Caesalpinia coriaria), a salute to the arbor symbol of the Guajira department,  June 29-July 1.
