Traveler Advice

By Lorraine Caputo

The central part of Riohacha is said to be safe at night, but not the barrios on the far side of Calle 15. Evenings you will see families sitting in front of their homes, taking advantage of the nocturnal breeze. Care should be taken, also, on more secluded parts of the beach during dark hours.

During the rainy season, take precautions against disease-carrying mosquitoes. The tap water is not safe to drink without treatment.
