Restaurants

Riohacha has a surprising variety of restaurants. Many offer fresh fish and seafood dishes, but also some surprising alternatives. Prices tend to be a bit higher here, owing to the shortage of water. Comida corrientes are difficult to find and cost $2.10-2.65, sans drink. Carreras 8 and 9, from Calles 13 to 14, buzzes with the mercado. A larger municipal market is about 5 blocks south of Calle 15 on Carrera 7. Supermarket Cumaná Express is conveniently downtown (Monday-Saturday 8-11 a.m., 2-9 p.m., Sunday 8a.m.-1 p.m., 5-9 p.m. Calle 2 7-46). On the beach at the foot of Carrera 11, fishermen sell their catch in the late afternoon.

Nightlife

Along Avenida la Marina are several bars open until late at night where you can sit out at a sidewalk table nursing a beer, watching the Riohachero night and singing along with the gang to Vallenatos. Discos are almost exclusively a Thursday to Friday night affair.
