By Lorraine Caputo

Lodging costs quite a bit more in the Guajira, due in large part to the high cost of water. Shoestring travelers should budget for this. Options to camp or to sling your hammock is also possible in some areas—or may be anyone’s only choice. Large chain hotels have yet to arrive on the scene, and Wayuu communities are resisting their entrance into the market. Wayuu prefer to welcome guests in traditional style, thus promoting employment and economic opportunities. In villages and rancherías, do not expect the installed shower to work. You will have to echar el agua. A large covered container is provided from which you dip water to throw over you. Keep the water within clean (it can also be treated for drinking, if not brackish) and capped (to minimize mosquito breeding habitats).
