Traveler Advice Types:
Responsible travel, behavior, indigenous regions
When asked about etiquette when traveling in their homeland, Wayuu suggest the following to alijuna visitors:
• Water is very important. Do not waste it. Use only what is necessary for showering.
• Always ask permission to take photos.
• Cemeteries are sacred grounds. You may enter, but have much respect. Don't touch anything.
• If you present a gift to a family you are visiting, give it to the head of the household.
• Drinking alcohol is taboo.
• If you see someone begging, give if you feel moved to.
• Don’t give candy or money to children.
• When eating with Wayuu, do not begin until everyone is present and seated.
• After a meal, especially lunch, it is customary to take a siesta.
These are the dress norms in Wajirra:
• Men may wear shorts. Sleeveless shirts are fine at home; in public, wear a shirt with sleeves. Going shirtless is frowned upon.
• Women may use any type of shirt, with sleeves or without, or even showing the midriff. However, as for men, going shirtless is not accepted. Pants are okay, as are shorts.
• Both genders can swim in whatever they’d like, but no skinny dipping.
