Climate, peak seasons
The Guajira is hot, especially the Media and Alta; temperatures can reach over 40 degrees Celsius (over 100 degrees Fahrenheit). Depending on the region, the most scorching and wettest months are different. In the Media Guajira—Riohacha and Manaure—May-July are the hottest months, with rains coming in April and again between September- November. As you move into the Alta Guajira, patterns change. Inland, around Uribia, showers come from May - July. Cabo de la Vela, on the coast, has its rains June - August and heat from September - November and January - February. The entire region experiences high winds in January and February.
The beaches of the Guajira, like Palomino and Cabo de la Vela, have become very popular vacation destinations for Colombians. At Christmas-New Years, Semana Santa (especially) and three-day holiday week-ends they are very crowded and prices rise accordingly.
