Holiday & Fiesta

By Lorraine Caputo

The biggest event in Uribia is the annual Festival de la Cultura Wayuu, held the last week of May, highlighting all aspects of this indigenous nation's traditions and the election of their Majayut de Oro, or Miss Gold.

Pre-Carnaval is celebrated for two weeks before Carnaval, on Friday and Saturday nights. At dusk, the townspeople, dressed in costumes, dance through the streets to the rhythm of bands. Then comes the pre-Lenten party through these streets.
