By Lorraine Caputo

At her home in Barrio Abuchairre, doña Cecilia of the Jusayú clan sits in an open-sided hut. A colleague shows her a new technique for weaving drawstrings for susu, or bags. From a line, in the shade of another hut, hang an assortment of the susu in earthen and brighter colors, mostly in traditional designs. Also strung from pole to pole is a double-faced hammock, thick yet cool and comfortable, woven by her and other women out at the ranchería. Her work is certified by Artesanías de Colombia in Bogotá and carries the Icontec seal of quality.
