If you are not making your way to this river city for the major Semana Santa festivities, it is good to remember that a visit to Mompós is not all about seeing and doing. The activities are slim pickings; a trip here is more about soaking up the atmosphere.
While there are ornate churches to be seen, Masonic histories to be investigated and walks to be had, Mompós lends itself to rising early to view the howler monkeys in the park. Afterwards, stroll down Calle del Medio, making a detour to the Plaza del Mercado, and observe life here before heading back along the shady riverfront to where the wealthier residents live in the Portales de la Marquesa.
Tours of the Ciénaga are offered at the ludicrously hot hour of 2 p.m., and you can rent bicycles at some establishments to make your own trips. For those interested, cockfights are also held around town on most weekends.
Mompós has a few beautiful churches and two museums. The Museo Cultural (Admission $1.50; Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-noon) houses a collection of religious art and memorabilia related to Simón BolÃvar. The Casa de la Cultura (Admission $0.50; Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) is a museum documenting Mompós’ history.
