Semana Santa is Mompós’ one real high season. During this time, streets are filled with Nazarenes and Colombian tourists. The normally sleepy town also receives an economic boost during December and January from family members who return for the holidays and tourists coming from the coast. Aside from these times, life in Mompós is pretty slow.
The wet season stretches over the months of April and May, and September through October. During these months, downpours can keep normally high temperatures in the upper 20sºC (70sºF). Outside of these months, Mompós is hot and dry, typically hovering above 30ºC (86ºF).
August 6 marks the Independence of Mompós. On and around this date, revelers enjoy more than a few cold ones while watching the rodeos and listening to the booming street music.
In 2008, Juan Ensuncho Bárcena founded the Mompós Independent Film Festival. Since then, thousands of locals and foreigners have gathered in town each year to appreciate over 150 independent films with democratic, political and social themes. This event is free and typically takes place over four or five days, though the date changes each year. In 2010, the festival was cancelled due to flooding in Mompós. The festival will resume in 2011. For more information, check out the festival’s Facebook page (URL: www.facebook.com/festicinemompox).
