The first thing you notice upon arriving in Puerto BerrÃo is the staggering heat and humidity. Temperatures average above 30ºC (87ºF). Once you have become accustomed to the dank humidity that leaves everyone covered in a shimmer of sweat, you note the obvious absence of the typical hills. Puerto BerrÃo and this region of the Magdalena River are quite flat.
Formerly, Puerto BerrÃo had greater significance as a transport hub for the rail network, moving coal and other products through Colombia. Now, the railroad service is gone and the town is little more than a vital port on the Magdalena River. All that remains are some forlorn tracks and a historic engine in front of the military base.
In the past, Puerto BerrÃo was renowned for its bawdy whiskerÃas (brothels) and chicas de la vida alegre (prostitutes), fulfilling its role as a transit hub among linking river and rail networks. To some extent, this is still the case around the port area, where some of these establishments can still be found.
