Security should be at the fore of any visitor’s conscience on coming to Buenaventura. This is ground zero for turf wars between the paramilitaries and the guerrillas who want to control a lucrative area for the drugs trade. The murder rate in the city is startling high and tourists are advised not to stray from Calle 1 at night. There is high unemployment and therefore problems of delinquency arise as well.
