History of Ibagué

Originally founded by Andres Lopez de Galarza in 1550 on the current-day site of Cajamarca, the town of Villa de San Bonifacio de Ibagué del Valle de las Lanzas was moved a year later to escape the spears and continuing attacks of the Pijao Indians, led by their Chief Ibagué. From here the town grew steadily until it was drawn into the spotlight for a brief spell as the capital of Nueva Granada after a Coup d’Etat in 1854.
