While the whole Upper Magdalena River Valley is considered a safe place for tourists and for traveling, it is worth noting that in Neiva in 2007 there were two attempts to assassinate the then-mayor. As Neiva is a gateway to regions such as Caquetá and Putumayo (considered the “zona roja”) there is always a possibility that some violence, normally restricted to the aforementioned areas, may spill over.
