Medellín, Colombia

Culture and Arts

By Richard McColl

It is no secret that 80 percent of all cut flowers grown in Colombia are sold to the United States, and the Feria de las Floresshows why! Recognized as the most important and traditional Feria in Medellin, this festival brings the city to a halt in a flower scented and brightly colored gridlock over a week in August. Parades of garlands float through the city streets, but it is the Silleteros Parade (2007 marked the 50th year of this competition) that defines the whole week, when elaborate and complex tableaus of flowers are paraded and judged. Also to be enjoyed are the classic car, mule and orchid parades.
