Culture and Arts

By Richard McColl

Created in 1991 against the bloody backdrop that was Medellin at the start of the 1990's, the Medellin International Poetry Festival, has since grown from a small event to a national phenomenon. In 2007 it celebrated its 17th anniversary with poets from all over the world invited to participate in readings in theaters and parks about Medellin. Taking place every July, the Festival is well worth checking out. Especially worthwhile is the opening ceremony, held every year in the theater on the Cerro Nutibara.
