Modern-day Medellin may lull the traveler into a false sense of security, but given that this is a big city there are still problems. Gone are the dark days of Escobarian terror, but drug trafficking is still an issue and visitors should be wary in the evening especially downtown. Security is tight in El Poblado where most hostels and hotels are located.
