Bridge
The bridge of the West, or Puente de Occidente, is a 291m-long bridge over the Rio Cauca, linking the municipalities of Olaya and Santa Fe de Antioquia. Designed by Jose Maria Villa and built between 1887 and 1895, it is a gem of late 19th century engineering. The platform is of wood with a capacity for two pedestrian and one vehicular route. Pull yourself up the hill using the rope near the west towers for a great view from above. Stand in the middle as trucks rattle across to feel the whole structure wobble.
The bridge is 5km east of town. Negotiate a return trip by taxi or hire a motorcycle to zip you there and back. Walking takes about an hour and can be grueling in the afternoon heat.
