In the major cities such as Medellin the visitor will be pleasantly surprised at the overriding sense and feeling of security, but you are advised to exercise caution at night, especially in the downtown areas.
Road travel for the most part is safe, although in western parts of Risaralda that lead to the Choco travel is not recommended. On occasion night travel on buses from Medellin east into Santander through a region known as the Magdalena Medio can be suspended due to activities by one or another of the armed groups rife in Colombia.
