Only 80 kilometers away from Cali, Buga is another world from Cali’s busy salsa dancing streets. One of the oldest cities in Colombia, Buga was founded by the Spanish in 1555, then called Guadalajara de Buga. This medium-sized city is famous for the BasÃlica del Señor de los Milagros (Cra. 14, 3-62. Tel: 228-2823, URL: www.milagrosdebuga.com), which is home to the gold-plated El Señor de los Milagros (The Lord of Miracles). This church attracts nearly a million visitors and pilgrims every year, who come to pay their respects and to pray for miracles. Although completed in the 18th century and later destroyed by an earthquake, the Ermita was bestowed with the title of basÃlica in August of 1937 by Pope Pius XI.
From Cali, through several companies, you can catch a van from the main bus terminal for around $2-3. The ride takes about 40 minutes and the van will drop you at the terminal in Buga. From there, it is a straight 10-minute walk to the town center and the BasÃlica.
