On Sundays and public holidays masses of devout Colombian Catholics make their way from neighboring towns and from Cali itself to the town of Guadalajara de Buga to pay their respects to and ask favors of the Señor de los Milagros in the Basilica in Buga.
Buga, also known as the "Cuidad Señora" has a history that dates back as far as 1555, making it one of the oldest Spanish settlements in the country.
With a history dating back to its conception in 1573 (although completed in the 18th century and destroyed by an earthquake) the Ermita was bestowed with the title of Basilica in August 1937 by Pope Pius XI. This place has now become a central point for Catholics in Colombia and their pilgrimages. An estimated 2 million people a year come through here.
