La Basilica

Location:
Manizales, Colombia

Monument Types:
Cathedral

By Brenda Yun

The two bronze doors at the front entrance of La Basílica tell the story of this neo-Gothic church. This religious center was first built in 1854, but destroyed in 1878 in an earthquake. The wooden structure that replaced the original church later burned down in 1925. Construction of the current structure began in 1929, it is an impressive building both inside and out. Colorful stained glass is on display on all sides of this church. You can walk up the main tower, which is 106 meters high —the highest in the country— for $3. The stairway to the top is windy and steep, so it’s not for the faint-hearted.

The tower is open Tuesday - Sunday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Purchase your ticket from the western entrance.
