When to go to Zona Cafetera

Weather, Festival

By Brenda Yun

The rich, fertile land of the Zona Cafetera is 1000 meters above sea level.  Therefore, the climate in this region is almost always cool or cold, especially in the mountains.  The rainy seasons (March-May, September-November) can sometimes be depressing and bring rain all day without end.  Other times of the year are quite temperate and sometimes warm to hot.  The Feria in Manizales is one of the largest festivals in Colombia and always draws quite a crowd of local and tourists alike.  Also, Salento's population seems to double every weekend, as food tents and artisan stalls pop up on the main square and the town becomes very lively.  Salento also has a very popular, raucous celebration in remembrance of the town's foundation.
