Bataburo Lodge

Bataburo Lodge is on the Tiguino River, deep in the Amazon rainforest between seven to nine hours by bus and canoe form Coca. The lodge is located in the territory of the Huarorani people and is in primary rainforest where visitors can expect to see several species of mammals and reptiles, as well as hundreds of species of birds. There are 11 species of monkeys in the area, as well as caimans, harpy eagles, and anacondas. There are many activities at Bataburo Lodge. Native Huarorani guides, working through interpreters, will take visitors on jungle walks, canoe rides, night walks and visits to local indigenous communities. Many of the walks are intense four to six hour hikes through the rainforest. Itineraries are flexible, though. Nearby is a salt lick where parrots, parakeets and macaws congregate. Bataburo is rustic but comfortable. Most rooms have shared baths; two rooms have private baths. Each room is screened in and has mosquito netting.

The lodge can accommodate a maximum of 59 guests. Bataburo Lodge prides itself on the local food served there and guests can feast on fish from the river, as well as traditional food such as yucca (manioc). If you are interested in an adventure tour, or a combination of time at the lodge and camping out in the rainforest, such trips can also be arranged for between six days/seven nights, with two nights in tents, to eight days/seven nights, with five nights in tents. The prices range from $300 - 680 per person depending on the number of people in your group and the number of nights of your tour. Kempery Tours operates the lodge and organizes adventure tours. They have an office in Quito.

Traveler Reviews of Bataburo Lodge

Visit in Oct. 2007

Unfortunately we were not given much of what was promised during our 5 day trip. We were told the lodge was largely understaffed, and this certainly seemed true. We only took a few jungle walks, the electricity didn't work at any time, our native guide left our group a day early to go work with another lodge, and the food was not very good (which isn't a huge deal, but the brochure seems to boast about their great food). That said, it is remote, which is very nice!

Deep in the jungle

Bataburo is a great place to visit, the jungle there is beautiful, no other lodges are around, there are no luxuries but the place is amazing and guides very nice and helpful.
