Coca Attractions
If you have time, you may want to head to the waterfront to see the Municipality's Malecón 2003 Project, which includes a Center for Environmental Education and Tourism that is run by local high school students. The Malecón and the Environmental Education Center overlook the Napo River in front of the Port Authority, known in Spanish as the "Capitanía." Both initiatives hope to further develop tourism as an alternative to the oil industry, which the Municipality has wisely recognized will not be around forever.
Coca Adventure Travel
For the adventurous, there is the possibility of traveling by commercial barge down the Napo River to Nuevo Rocafuerte and across the border to Peru. The service is constantly changing, so anybody wishing to try this should check with the Capitanía to find out about current schedules and prices. It should be made clear that such an endeavor is not for the faint of heart; the trip, while surely exhilirating, is fraught with discomfort and perils.
