Just 4 km outside Macas, in a lovely five-hectare park, retired veterinarian Dr Vazquez and his family have created a wildlife sanctuary for all the wild animals that were once bought as pets and then discarded: turtles, parrots, a dozen different monkeys, a coati, a couple of boas, an ocelot, a young puma, a capybara (the world’s largest rodent), and more. The animals, all species native to the Amazon basin, are tended to, then when rehabilitated, are set free again in the forest, though a few of the smaller monkeys and parrots are simply too adapted to domestic life and stick around the center where they roam free. When taking you on a tour of the place, the owners will call each animal by its name and, while explaining about the creature’s mating and feeding habits, will regale you with tales about the animal's individual character. Doctor and Señora Vazquez are also very knowledgeable about the flora of the area, and will point out the cinnamon trees, cocoa pods and other plants in the park.
