When To Go To Macas

Macas’ higher altitude makes it a bit cooler than other destinations in the Amazon basin. Daytime highs only reach 25-28ºC (77-82ºF), and at night it drops to 12-14ºC (54-57ºF). It receives 2,414 millimetres (95 in) of rain per year. Although it rains every month, the wettest ones are April-July. Expect less precipitation December-February.

Besides the holidays celebrated in other parts of Ecuador – Carnaval, Semana Santa, Christmas and New Year’s Eve – Macas has a few of its own festivities. This city fêtes its patron saint, the Virgen Purísima de Macas, on February 18 (when it is called “Fiesta Jurada”) and August 5. On February 12 is Día del Oriente Ecuatoriano. Macas’ founding is observed May 23-29, with civic and military parades, as well as cultural and folkloric events.
