AmaZOOnico - Other Activity Tena - Ecuador

The animal rehabilitation center, amaZOOnico, is located in the middle of a protected jungle preserve and makes huge efforts to shelter a number of different animals, some in danger of extinction. The station was built in 1993, but its history began a couple of years earlier.

The animals arrive at the shelter in a number of ways, the majority coming from individuals who have found them or from the police (who have confiscated the animals from illegal traffickers). Most of the animals arrive at amaZOOnico in bad condition: malnourished, wounded due to being tied up, and very often full of parasites. Following their recovery, the majority of them eventually end up being set free. The remaining half must remain at amaZOOnico – either living free in the area, or in enclosures to protect them from other animals and hunters. Along with this, the Zoo is quite a spectacle, with plenty of animals existing within inches from you, many that’d you’d otherwise have to trek deep into the jungle to (hope to) see. The Zoo also provides internship and volunteer opportunities for those interested.
