The largest private ecological reserve in Ecuador, Hacienda Yanahurco sits on the foot of the Cotopaxi volcano with 65,000 acres of untamed páramo. Bundle up and catch a ride to Yanahurco on a 4WD to observe threatened species like the Andean condor, Spectacle bears, mountain tapir or pumas as you horseback ride through yellow-straw mountains. Staying in Yanahurco can be pricy, ranging from $193 per person for one night and two days with everything included, to $382 per person on special events like the cattle roundup in November and the horse roundup in March. You can, however, stay at a camping ground with your own gear and food for $25 per person. A true sense of Ecuadorian cowboy (chagras) lifestyle turns into a hands-on experience at Yanahurco, specially during roundups when wild cattle and horses are herded to the ranch for counting, branding and upkeep.
