Getting to and away from Alausí

Alausi’s bus station is located on 5 de Junio, just three blocks down from the train station (where most visitors arrive) along the town’s main street. Buses run throughout the day to and from smaller towns, and on set schedules to more popular destinations.

  • Bus to Cuenca (4.5 hours, $5): 6 a.m., 10 a.m., and immediately after the train arrives on tour days (Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays)

  • Bus from Cuenca: 5 a.m., 2:45 p.m. To Quito (5 hours, $5): 4:05 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m.

  • To Guayaquil (4.5 hours, $5): 4 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m.

  • Bus from Guayaquil: 4 a.m., 6 a.m., 9 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m.

  • Bus to and from Riobamba: (2 hours, $1.50): At least one bus runs every hour, between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m.

To get to the Ingapirca ruins in Cañar, get on any bus heading for Cuenca. You'll find the town just an hour and a half before Cuenca. It is also possible to catch buses on the highway that runs above town; while these pass more frequently than those scheduled at the station, they are often full.

You can head to Sibambe via train (from the Alausí train station) and catch a magnificent view of La Nariz del Diablo (The Devil's Nose) along the way. The trip costs $25 (roundtrip) and takes 2.5 hours. Trains depart Tuesday to Sunday. 8:00 a.m., 11:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
