Ambato Things to See and Do

follow us

Ambato is known as the "city of the three Juans", due to it being the birthplace of three notable figures: Juan Le├│n Mera, a prolific author (and the writer of Ecuador's national anthem); Juan Montalvo, a writer and essayist; and Juan Beningo Vela, a journalist. The legacy of the three Juans can be seen around Ambato, in its plazas and street names, and also in Mera's and Montalvo's former homes, which have been turned into museums. The main Plaza, Parque Montalvo, is Ambato's prettiest, and, with its many trees and fountains, it's a nice spot to perch on a bench and people-watch. From here you can also wander around the Catedral, a modern, white construction that sits on the site of the original cathedral, which was first built in 1698 and subsequently destroyed by the 1947 earthquake. Ambato is also the most convenient point from which to head to Quisapincha, a tiny town famous for its leather goods.
