Traveler Reviews of Mayra Spanish School

Waste of time and money

Rating: -10%

Poor instructors, if they even show up. Method of teaching at a basic level is horrible.

I speak Spanish

Rating: 100%

I spent 4 weeks in Mayra's School and now I speak español :-) The place is very nice, the teachers are serious and capable and most of them speak English, which is very helpfull at the beginning. Moreover, Baños is a very good place to study a language in a peacefull ambiance.

Excellent Spanish School with very knowledgable teachers

Rating: 100%

I was blown away by the original review of Mayra's school on this site. I have had the exact opposite experience. Mayra's school is excellent. I can't say enough good things about the professionalism, level of knowledge, patience, and work ethic of the teachers here. I've worked with two profesors here (Mayra and Marco). They both have an excellent knowledge of the language and they also are tuned into all of the errors that I will make as a foreigner. I've spent 3 weeks here now, and I have another week to go. I have been studying grammar, attempting to improve my listening comprehension, and reading skills. But I don't get much time in conversations normally. Here, I have focused on conversation (4 hours a day), and have about 2-3 hours of homework per night. I am studying here pretty hard, but I feel like I am getting a great payback on my time and money here. Classes are one on one, and there is no place to hide. I think learning a language is really hard work, but you will get out what you put into it. If you are willing to put effort into your learning here, you will learn Spanish at this school. They also make it a lot of fun. I have also learned a tremendous amount about the culture and the people here, and I think that is a big driver for me in learning the language.

SAE Member Trip Reports

Welcome to our Trip Report section.

Trip reports are written by travelers (members and non-members alike). These are enormously popular and provide up-to-date, hard-to-find specialized information on just about everything--discount airfares; lodging; language schools; travel conditions; volunteer opportunities, hiking, mountaineering, and kayaking equipment; local outfitters; collecting permits; guides, and uncountable other topics.

While some reports have been formatted for space and content, most reflect the untouched, unedited and winged words of our devoted explorers.

If you have gone on a trip recently and have comments, helpful hints or juicy tidbits about traveling in a particular country or region, or about traveling to South America in general, submit a trip report! Other members will appreciate it immensely.

Lastly, please remember that the following trip reports should only be used for informational purposes. Neither SAE, nor its staff or volunteers guarantees that the recommendations contained in these reports are accurate. We rely solely on the objectivity and honesty of our members when providing you with these reports.

Recommendations: Mayra´s Spanish School, Princess Maria Hostel

After traveling in SA for about 2 weeks I decided that I had to take at least one week of Spanish in order to be able to survive and get around easier. Chose Baños based on travelers recommendations as a good place to chill for a week. Checked out all the Spanish schools in Baños and finally decided on Mayra´s based on them having teachers who understood english in order to help out with any problem i might have, i got the best feel from them and the woman running my hostal, Princess Maria (best place i´ve stayed in SA), recommened them. Since I only had one week I decided on doing 7 hours a day(hellish) for five days. Went in with no spanish and came out beeing able to form basic sentances and comunicate with those i met traveling. Strongly recommend this school if you´re in the area and want to learn spanish.
