Stay with a local family on a homestay tour in this rural area of Ecuador and experience life on the farm for yourself. Guided farm tours available, you can help pick coffee, chocolate, bananas, oranges, etc. You can also visit sugarcane farmers to see them produce alcohol from sugarcane and taste the results. This eco-tourism project is run by a reforestation charity so you plant a tree for each night that you stay there as well. It's a fun, friendly way to get a tour off the beaten track.
Getting There
By bus from Quito (about 6 hours) or Guayaquil (about 4 hours). For the more adventurous, ask for a local guide in Salinas de Guaranda and take the 2-day downhill hike to San Luis de Pambil, the hometown of Eco-Friendly Farmstays and Tours.
