Hosteria San Mateo

San Mateo, a small, attractive inn located very close to Cotopaxi park, is a good option for travelers in the medium price range. Formerly the country home of a high-ranking government official, the building was built in the 1970s and was recently converted. There are only seven rooms, so space is limited. San Mateo is a family-friendly hotel, with a playground for children and some bunnies, geese, and other farm animals. The restaurant offers a variety of food, including the house special, a grilled steak served on a hot volcanic stone. Breakfast is superb.

Getting There:
Hosteria San Mateo is located on the southern highway 55 km south of Quito and 15 km north of Latacunga. Any bus traveling from Quito to Latacunga will pass it. It is on the west (right-hand) side of the highway and clearly marked.
