A small, attractive inn located very close to Cotopaxi park, San Mateo is a good option for travelers in the medium price range. Formerly the country home of a high-ranking government official, the building was built in the 1970s and recently converted. There are only seven rooms, so space is limited. San Mateo is a family-friendly hotel, with a playground for children and some bunnies, geese, and other farm animals. The restaurant offers a variety of food, including the house special, a grilled steak served on a hot volcanic stone. Breakfast is superb.

Getting There:
Hosteria San Mateo is located on the southern highway 55 km south of Quito and 15 km north of Latacunga. Any bus traveling from Quito to Latacunga will pass it. It is on the west (right-hand) side of the highway and clearly marked.

I liked the incredible food. Also, since it is on the way to many tourist places. it was very easy to get to them by public transportation.

This place is absolutely fantastic! Be sure to check out their website. The food is out of this world - the steak served on the volcanic rock is a highlight as is the quinoa soup. Worth the trip! Also arranged a once in a lifetime tour/guided trek to Cotopaxi for $60 for 3 people! The hacienda packed us a gourmet lunch to boot! Will go back for sure. OUTSTANDING service all around, wonderful staff, cabins were perfect, grounds gorgeous(even on off season) and the rates were excellent!
