San Agustín de Callo is one of the most intriguing haciendas available in Ecuador. Originally the site of a pre-Columbian Inca residence, it is one of few important Inca archaeological sites in Ecuador.

Originally built around 1440, it is specifically mentioned in the chronicles of Pedro Cieza de León, a Spanish conquistador who wrote a narrative of his travels in the mid-sixteenth century. The Spanish built on the site, which was given to the Augustinian religious order in 1590 before becoming private property. It has been in the Plaza family (which boasts two Ecuadorian presidents) since 1921. The University of Texas has an ongoing archaeological project at the hacienda.

Hacienda San Agustín de Callo is located in Cotopaxi province, about an hour and a half from Quito, not far from the towns of Pujili and Saquisili. Like most haciendas, it has spacious rooms, beautiful gardens, full dining and good service.

The rooms and suites are particularly elegant, and boast names like “Inca Tambo Suite” and “Bonpland Room.” Some of the rooms even feature original Inca stonework walls. It offers horseback riding, trekking, biking and organized trips to the markets in Pujili and Saquisili. The markets in these towns do sell souvenirs and other stuff for tourists, but they are not like Otavalo. They are more traditional and are still used by the local population as a very real location for commerce.

San Agustín de Callo is one of the more expensive haciendas, with double occupancy starting at $305.
