Set just inside the bleak, beautiful wilderness that is the Cotopaxi National Park, Tambopaxi advertises itself as an acclimatization center, "... the best place to stay and climb Cotopaxi." At an 3,750 m elevation, this is probably a resonable claim. Tambopaxi offers hostel accommodation. There are two dormitory huts, one with 27 beds spread across four rooms and the other with eight beds spread across three rooms. Whilst the buildings are the only ones visible for miles within the national park, the careful use of construction materials and close attention to aesthetic detail mean that the environment is not detrimentally impacted by the presence of the buildings. It is also possible to camp at Tambopaxi.

There is a flat camp site of approximately 2,000 square meters. Campers enjoy the same facilities as those staying in the huts. For those who do not wish to spend an overnight in the national park, Tambopaxi also has a restaurant which offers delicious, hearty set meals with a stunning view of Cotopaxi itself on a clear day.

From the Panamericana Sur highway, take the turn off towards the north entrance of the national park - found by traveling through the town of Machachi.

Is the best lacation ever.

Hot broth on a cold day

I visited the restaurant. The food was good, wholesome, but most importantly of all, wonderfully hot, which was very necessary after a freezing morning spent in the Cotopaxi National Park. The set three-course meal was a little expensive, but well worth the money with a delicious soup to start, a choice of chicken, beef or fish for a main and chocolate cake for dessert. One of the best things about the restaurant was the amazing view of Cotopaxi. Additionally, bulls were being herded at the time that we were eating our meal, and it was interesting to watch the cowboys trying to lasso the bulls and put them into trucks.
