Camping In Parque Nacional Cotopaxi - Campground Cotopaxi National Park - Ecuador

Travelers on a budget or those wanting a more intimate relationship with nature have several choices of camping at Parque Nacional Cotopaxi. Be sure to have a wind and rain-resistant tent, good sleeping bag and thermal sleeping mat, as well as a cook stove that is fitted for high altitude. Within the park, campfires are ONLY allowed in campsites and picnic areas.

Near the El Boliche train depot, on the other side of the railroad tracks, is the Río Daule campsite (free). It has plenty of flat tent spaces, two small picnic shelters (unsuitable for sleeping in) and fireplaces. Drinking water is available from the river about 0.5 kilometers (0.3 mi) past the campground, beyond a bend in the road. This is a good place to spend your first night. The dirt road continues climbing gradually and one to two kilometers beyond Río Daule, it passes a hairpin bend with a camp by it; there is a stable and a thatched hut, but no water.

The national park service provides several designated campgrounds inside the park. One zone is past the Estación Mariscal Sucre, about 0.5 kilometers (0.3 mi) before the Plains of Limpiopungo, on the left side. The site has two latrines. A second campground is at the crossroads to Laguna Limpiopungo. A third camping area is at Laguna de Santo Domingo, northeast of Cotopaxi volcano. All three of these campgrounds cost $3 for Ecuadorians and $5 for foreigners. No camping is allowed around Laguna Limpiopungo.

Trekkers doing the Vuelta al Cotopaxi, Trek of the Cóndor or other hikes may wild camp. Be sure to take precautions to not damage the fragile páramo environment.

Several of the lodges in Parque Nacional Cotopaxi have campgrounds: Tambopaxi, Hacienda El Porvenir and Cuello de Luna.
