When To Go To Guaranda

Guaranda has a humid temperate climate. It receives approximately 1,000 millimeters (39 in) of precipitation per year. The dry season is May-October. Daytime temperatures range 14-19ºC (57-66ºF), and at night 8-12ºC (46-53ºF), though it can get quite colder.


Carnaval is Guaranda’s biggest fiesta. This moveable feast falls at the end of February or the beginning of March, and is the week before Ash Wednesday. The town’s balconies are colorfully decorated, streamers and confetti flurry through the streets, and water douses everyone. Chicha and the local Pájaro Azul aguardiente (firewater) fuel on the festive air.


Other annual observances of Guarandeños are:

April 23 – Founding of Bolívar Province

July 29 -- Fiestas de San Pedro de Guanujo, the town’s patron saint

November 10 -- Independence of the city of Guaranda, from the Spaniards
