In general, Guaranda has the general small town Ecuador fare: lots of small restaurants serving meat and rice. They are usually a good value – just make sure you are comfortable with the cleanliness of the restaurant. If you are itching to try cuy, Guaranda has a handful of decent restaurants that sell it for a lower price than in bigger cities like Quito. Other typical Guarandeño dishes are tamales and chihuile, a cheese-filled tamale. Daily markets happen at Mercado 10 de Noviembre, on the south side of town, and Plaza 15 de Mayo, on the north side. Saturday is best.
