The landscape around Chugchilán is fascinatingly diverse, and great for exploring by horse. The relatively small region is home to the Paramo highlands, vast expanses of Andean farmland, the lowland riverbed of the Río Toachi, and both primary and secondary cloud forests. Within just a few hours, you can experience several dramatically different terrains and climate zones, visit a highland cheese factory and stick your toes into one of several nearby waterfalls.
Any of the hostels can arrange horses and a local guide for 4-6 hour expeditions, costing around $10-15 per person. Horses are generally in fairly good shape though some seem a little tired; be sure you have a happy trotter before heading for the hills.
