Getting To and Away from Chugchilán

Daily buses go around the Quilotoa Loop in both directions, beginning at Latacunga and ending in Chugchilán. These buses are operated by Transporte Illiniza, who have a stand in the Latacunga bus terminal.

In Chugchilán, buses depart from the teeny-tiny bus station opposite the hotel Posada Blanquita.

Latacunga to Chugchilán via Sigchos (3.5 hr, $2.50): Buses depart Monday to Friday at 11.30 a.m., stopping in Saquisilí at around 12 p.m. and Sigchos around 2 p.m. Buses also run Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 11.30 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Latacunga to Chugchilán via Quilotoa (3.5 hr, $2.50). Buses depart Monday to Saturday at 12 p.m., stopping in Zumbahua at 2 p.m. and in Quilotoa at 2.30 p.m. On Sunday, buses run at 7 a.m., 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Chugchilán to Latacunga via Sigchos (3.5 hr, $2.50): Buses leave Chugchilán daily at 3 a.m. (note that buses sometimes leave as late as 4 a.m., but be there at 3 a.m. just in case), stopping in Sigchos around 4 a.m. and arriving in Latacunga at 6.30 a.m. You can also hop on the 9 a.m daily milk truck for $1 (ask at your hotel for information), which goes to Sigchos only; from there, you can take a bus onto Latacunga (see Sigchos to Latacunga for more information).

Chugchilán to Latacunga via Quilotoa (3.5 hr, $2.50): Buses leave Chugchilán daily at 4 a.m. (note that buses sometimes leave as late as 5 a.m., but be there at 4 a.m. just in case), stopping in Quilotoa at 5 a.m., Zumbahua at 5.30 a.m. and arriving in Latacunga at 7.30 a.m. On Wednesdays and Fridays, buses also leave Chugchilán at 6 a.m., stopping in Quilotoa at 7 a.m., Zumbahua at 7.30 a.m. and arriving in Latacunga at 9.30 a.m.

If you get stuck or aren’t eager to brave the early mornings, you can hire a private pickup: ask at your hostel, or try Transportes de Caminetas (Tel: 091-037-363) by the bus station in Chugchilán. A pickup to Quilotoa costs $25; to Sigchos $20; and to Lataguna $60 (prices are per-truck and are based on a maximum of five people; for each extra person, there is a $5 additional charge).
