La Virgen de la Merced is a pretty white and red church on the corner of Eugenio Espejo y Guayaquil, across from the Riobamba food market. An inscription inside the vestibule reads "Señor, no nos dejes caer en la tentación" (Lord, lead us not into temptation) and the interior of the church features a large gold altar. Like many Riobamba attractions, however, La Virgen is usually closed. The church opens for services Tuesday through Friday (at 7 a.m.), Saturdays (7 p.m.) and Sundays (7, 9, 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.).
