Clean bathrooms, spacious comfortable rooms, friendly service and an excellent location makes Hotel Tren Dorado a great place to lay your backpack for a a few days while you explore the south-central city of Riobamba.

Hotel Tren Dorado is a great value, if not just for hotel in Riobamba, but in all of Ecuador. Tren Dorado offers a few room sizes, but regardless of which accomodation you choose, the cost is $8 per person, per night.

Painted bright green and pink on the outside, Tren Dorado is hard to miss. Located on Carabobo, the hotel it is just one block to the east of the Riobamaba Train Station, where the infamous trainride for El Nariz del Diablo (the Devil´s Nose) departs.

Not only convenient to the train station, Tren Dorado is also the only place in town that serves up breakfast early enough so that those who have tickets for the train ride can eat breakfast before the 7 am departure. Starting at 5:30 am on Sundays and Wednesdays (the ONLY two days that the train runs), Tren Dorado serves-up a deleicious continental breakfast buffet of bread, fruit, granola, yogurt, coffee, juice and tea.

Aside from its close proximity to the train station, it is also only blocks from the weekend markets, museums and the many restaurants that lie along Avenida Leon Borja.

Not the Best

The actual hotel is not bad, clean and quiet. However, the owners were not the best. I reserved two rooms on a Monday for that Saturday. When I got there they had no record of me calling, despite the fact my friend had confirmed the next day, and I even showed them I had called their number on my phone and talked for 5 minutes. They were able to find me one room for my two friends. Luckily we were only there one night.

Apparently the hotel to stay in if your booked onto the Devils nose train,
also conveniently placed for the rest of Rio Bamba. Our 4 bed family room was about the cleanest we found in Ecuador with daily maid service and the showers were constantly hot, again not usual in Ecuador. The breakfast was served in the adjoining rainforest cafe and cost US$3, a voucher is bought from the hotel reception and presented to the cafe staff. It was $8 pp a night so by European prices ridiculously cheap. In case of Train strike which occasionally happens the hotel arranges a number of alternative adventures, ours was an ascent to 5000m of the local volcano Chimborozo at $15 each by taxi.
