Salinas de Bolívar

(Altitude: 3,560 m / 11,677 ft, Population: 1,100, City Code: 03)

A windy bus ride on dirt roads through the Ecuadorian countryside brings you to the small town of Salinas. Not to be confused with the beach destination, its official name is Salinas de Bolívar or Salinas de Guaranda. If you are looking to see peaceful, relaxing country life in Ecuador, Salinas is the perfect place.

During Spanish colonial times, Salinas de Bolívar was a major producer of salt—thus its name. Since the 1970s, though, it has become famous for its cheese, chocolates, salamis and sweaters. Everything is made in fair-trade factories. One taste of the chocolates and cheeses, and you will be wondering if it would be acceptable to fill up an entire suitcase to bring home. That is, if you don't accidentally eat them all before you even leave Ecuador.

Salinas has few lodging and eating options. Nothing is five-star, but you can find clean and cozy accommodations and restaurants serving typical Ecuadorian cuisine, with daily almuerzo specials.

An entry of $2 is charged to enter Salinas de Bolívar village. It is another $5 to visit the village
