Cooperatives - Other Activity Salinas de Bolívar - Ecuador

Salinas de Bolívar is a living example of sustainable economic growth. It all began back in 1971, with the idea of Silesian priest Cándido Rada and Swiss volunteer José Duvach, and blossomed under the direction of Father Antonio Polo. Today over two dozen cooperatives open their doors to the public. The fair-trade factories produce foodstuffs – like cheeses, chocolates, marmalades, trout, salamis mushrooms, and turrón taffy – woollen clothing, buttons, soccer balls and other items. As well, the community has a hostel, Hotel el Refugio. If you can’t make it to the factories, no worries; everything can be bought for the same price in a store called Tienda El Salinerito, right off of the main square.
