A thin river winds across the páramo and licks the edges of the saline deposits. At dawn during the dry summer months (July-October), you can see the local women working these mines, much as their ancestors did many centuries ago. In the afternoons, they return to the village, leading donkeys bearing buckets of the precious salt.
