Cabañas Rose Cottage

Set up in the hills three kilometers (two miles) outside Otavalo, Rose Cottage opened its doors in 2008 and offers guests a beautiful base from which to explore the surrounding area. Guests can stroll downhill to the famous Otavalo market, take nature hikes around the area, or visit the nearby Lagunas Mojanda or Laguna Cuicocha.

Rose Cottage offers a range of clean and cozy options in its five distinct cabins. Those on a tighter budget can stay in dorms or rooms with shared bath or private bath. You can also reserve entire cabins all to yourself. Casa Cayambe ($30) is the cheapest private cottage. Technically, its two beds (one twin, one double) can accommodate up to three people. However, keep in mind that this cabin is extremely compact: the door's sign even jokes that it's a "home for hobbits". On the other end of the scale, the luxurious Casa Chimborazo ($100) fits up to five. The private cabins are good options for groups, families or couples.

Located around the grounds are table tennis, TV, DVD selections, a book exchange and safe storage. Active travelers can enjoy the on-site tennis court (free) or rent a bicycle to explore the surrounding highlands (small fee). There's a lovely mirador from which you can watch the sun set while relaxing on a hammock.

The breakfast is included in the price, but only consists of juice and bread (no eggs or real coffee -- just the instant kind). Additional breakfast items, as well as dinner, are available for order. The friendly owner offers guests a free ride down to Otavalo at the end of their stay.
